JAPAN

Flag
The flag of Japan may look simple, but it has a lot of meaning behind it. The white background represents purity, honesty, and integrity, while the red circle symbolizes the sun. This is especially important because Japan is often called the “Land of the Rising Sun.” Even though this design has been used for many years, it did not officially become Japan’s national flag until 1999. I think it’s interesting how such a simple design can tell so much about a country’s culture, history, and identity. (Source: Britannica "Flag of Japan")

👋 Looking at the photo is a great way to learn some common Japanese greetings and phrases. While many people learn Japanese from family members or through cultural experiences, there are also plenty of fun ways to get started on your own. Apps like Duolingo can help you practice basic vocabulary and conversation skills, and many schools offer Japanese language classes as well.

Learning even a few words and phrases can be a fun way to connect with Japanese culture and language!

Experience

Japan is a country that I have grown to appreciate through multiple visits over the years. Each trip has given me the opportunity to learn more about its culture, language, traditions, and way of life. I enjoy experiencing Japan’s beautiful geography, from the famous cherry blossoms in the spring to the breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. Coming from Guam, I also appreciate getting to experience the different seasons that we do not have back home, especially the changing colors of fall and the cooler winter weather. Of course, I always look forward to the amazing food and shopping, which are some of my favorite parts of visiting. As a Filipino raised on Guam, I find it interesting to compare Japanese culture with my own. While our traditions and customs may be different, both cultures place a strong value on family, respect, hospitality, and community, which makes me feel connected to and appreciative of both. 🇯🇵🇵🇭🌺✨

Comments

  1. I often joke that my stomach is Japanese. I find that when I meet Japanese tourists I would ask them where they are from and I would usually talk about the famous foods I know from their prefecture. They always are surprised that I know so much about Japan. It goes to show that appreciation of a place or culture goes a long way in our relationships.
